Question 481920: Jack brought his wife and 4 kids to a local town picnic.
The tickets cost 14 dollars.
Bill brought his wife and 6 kids and his tickets cost 23 dollars.
How much do the adult tickets cost? How much do the kid tickets cost?
I would have guessed that kids tickets would have been $4.50 a piece since there was a 9 dollar difference between the two families. But 4.50 was not one of the answers.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
I think there is something wrong with
this problem. It might have been misprinted
----------------------------
Let a = cost of a kid's ticket
Let b = cost of an adult's ticket
given:
For Jack:
(1) +4a+%2B+2b+=+14+
For Bill,
(2) +6a+%2B+2b+=+23+
---------------
(1) +4a+=+14+-+2b+
(1) +a+=+%2814+-+2b%29%2F4+
and
(2) +6a+=+23+-+2b+
(2) +a+=+%2823+-+2b%29%2F6+
Therefore:
+%2814+-+2b%29%2F4+=+%2823+-+2b%29%2F6+
Multiply both sides by 24
+6%2A%2814+-+2b%29+=+4%2A%2823+-+2b%29+
+84+-+12b+=+92+-+8b+
+12b+-+8b+=+84+-+92+
+4b+=+-8+
+b+=+-2+
So, the Adults get paid $2 each to go to the picnic. Such a deal!
