Your parents ask you to fertilize the lawn. It is a square plot that is 13 feet on each side and it has a sqare cement fountain in the center that is 6 feet on each side. What is the area of the lawn that you will fertilize?

Lawn Area = Area of Big Square - Area of Small Square (drawing a picture will help you see this)


Lawn Area = 13^2 - 6^2


Lawn Area = 169 - 36


Lawn Area = 133


So the area of the lawn to be fertilized is 133 square feet.
