Add and solve for "y":
12y = 48
y = 4

Solve for "x":
x + 4y = 24
x + 16 = 24
x = 8

x+4y=24..........(1)
-x+8y=24.........(2)
Add (1) and (2)
x+4y=24
-x+8y=24
12y=48
Divide by 12 both sides of above equation
12y/12=48/12
y=4
Put the value of y in any of two equations (1) or (2)
x+4y=24
x+4(4)=24
x+16=24
Subtract 16 from both sides of above equation
x+16-16=24-16
x=8
Solution Set (x,y)=(8,4)
Check:
Put the value of x and y in any of two equations (1) or (2)
-x+8y=24
-(8)+8(4)=24
-8+32=24
24=24
