I know to choose three numbers and replace x with each number, but I don't understand how you would know if your answer is correct. Please help.

but, if this helps....
substitute x or y with a number, make it small, 1 through 5 and solve for the x or y that wasnt used, the answer will be the second point
continue doing this, gradually going up 1 or 2 numbers until you have about 3 or 4 points, if they are in a straight line, you should be good
