The real roots of the quadratic (in fact, any equation) are the x-intercepts. You can identify them, but you cannot do so very accurately, and sometimes the quadratic might appear to be tangent to the x-axis when it might have two distinct roots. Also, if the quadratic does not have any x-intercepts, its roots are complex.
