You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A passenger train leaves a station 2 hours after a freight train leaves the same station.
The freight train is 20km/hour slower than the passenger train.
Find the rate of each train if the passenger train overtakes the freight after 3 hours.
:
Let x = pass train speed
then
(x-20) = freight train speed
:
When the pass train overtakes the freight they will have traveled the same distance
From the information given we know: the pass train travels for 3 hrs, and the freight for 5 hrs
:
Write dist equation: dist = speed * time
:
5(x-20) = 3x
5x - 100 = 3x
5x - 3x = 100
2x = 100
x = 100%2F2
x = 50 mph is the pass train speed
then
50 - 20 = 30 mph is the freight train
:
:
Check solution by finding the distance traveled by each train, should be equal
5*30 = 150
3*50 = 150
