Simplifying
5 + -1(2x + 3) = -2(4 + x)
Reorder the terms:
5 + -1(3 + 2x) = -2(4 + x)
5 + (3 * -1 + 2x * -1) = -2(4 + x)
5 + (-3 + -2x) = -2(4 + x)
Combine like terms: 5 + -3 = 2
2 + -2x = -2(4 + x)
2 + -2x = (4 * -2 + x * -2)
2 + -2x = (-8 + -2x)
Add '2x' to each side of the equation.
2 + -2x + 2x = -8 + -2x + 2x
Combine like terms: -2x + 2x = 0
2 + 0 = -8 + -2x + 2x
2 = -8 + -2x + 2x
Combine like terms: -2x + 2x = 0
2 = -8 + 0
2 = -8
Solving
2 = -8
This equation is invalid, the left and right sides are not equal, therefore there is no solution.
