You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let x=length of side of original square
Then x^2=area of original square
(x+12)=length of new square
And (x+12)^2=x^2+24x+144=area of new square
Now we are told that:
x^2+24x+144-x^2=240 sq cm. Sooooo
subtract 144 from each side
x^2+24x-x^2+144-144=240-144 collect like terms
24x=96
x=4 cm-----ans
CK
16*16=256
4*4=16
256-16=240
240=240

Hope this helps---ptaylor
