You can put this solution on YOUR website!
I assume that problem is:
14(.3n - .31) = 5.18 - (.4 - 4.22n)
:
Multiply what is inside the brackets on the left side, results
4.2n - 4.34 = 5.18 - (.4 - 4.22n)
:
remove the brackets, a neg outside the brackets changes the signs inside, results
4.2n - 4.34 = 5.18 - .4 + 4.22n
4.2n - 4.34 = 4.78 + 4.22n
:
Group the n's on the left and the numbers on the right and you have
4.2n - 4.22n = 4.78 + 4.34
-.02n = 9.12
:
Make n positive and get rid of the decimals, Multiply both sides by -100
2n = -912
:
Divide both sides by 2
n = %28-912%29%2F2
n = -456
:
:
Let's see if that flies in the original equation
14(.3n - .31) = 5.18 - (.4 - 4.22n)
replace n with -456
14(.3(-456) - .31) = 5.18 - (.4 - 4.22(-456))
14(-136.8 - .31) = 5.18 - (.4 + 1924.32)
14(-137.11) = 5.18 - 1924.72
-1919.54 = -1919.54, confirms our solution of n =-456
