Question 466737: I have a couple problems I need help with. I did the first one, I just am having a hard time with the second one. Please help me :)
a) 2(y-1)^2 = 4(y+1)^2

b) x/3 - x/12 = -4

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
a) 2(y-1)^2 = 4(y+1)^2
---
2(y^2-2y+1) = 4(y^2+2y+1)
Divide both sides by 2 to get:
-----
y^2-2y+1 = 2y^2+4y+2
-----
y^2+6y+1 = 0
y = [-6 +- sqrt(36-4*1)]/2
y = [-6 +- 4sqrt(2)]/2
---
y = -3+-2sqrt(2
====================================
b) x/3 - x/12 = -4
Multiply thru by 12 to get:
4x-x = -48
3x = -48
x = -16
