3x² - 4x + 1, when x = 1
= 3(1)² - 4(1) + 1 {substituted 1 in for x}
= 3(1) - 4 + 1 {squared the 1 and multiplied -4 by 1}
= 3 - 4 + 1 {multiplied 3 by 1}
= -1 + 1 {subtracted 3 - 4}
= 0
