Question 466436: i really would appreciate some help with this problem. trains A and B are traveling in the same direction on parallel tracks. train A is traveling at 40 mph and train B is traveling at 50 mph. train A passes a station at 2:25 a.m. if train B passes the same station at 2:37 a.m.,at what time will train B catch up to train A? You can put this solution on YOUR website! Train A 40 kmph
Train B 50 kmph
Train A 02:25
Train B 02:37
Difference in time=00:12 minutes=> 0.2 hours
Train A will have covered 8 miles before Train B leaves station
catch up distance= 8 miles
catch up speed = 50 -40 mph
catch up speed = 10 mph
Catchup time = catchup distance/catch up speed
catch up time= 8 / 10
catch up time= 0.8 hours
catch up time= 48 minutes
It will catch up at 3:25 pm

You can put this solution on YOUR website! Distance = rate*time
or
d = r*t
distance traveled is distance from station to point where train B catches up to train A, call it D
time T is time in minutes elapsed from 2:25
Train A:
d= D
r = 40
t = T
D = 40T
Train B:
d = D
r = 50
t = T-12
D = 50(T-12)
Use substitution, D=D
Distribute
Subtract 40T on both sides, Add 600 on both sides
Divide by 10 on both sides
T is in minutes
60 min = 1 hour
Trains meet at 3:25
