Question 466431: Not sure how to write this on here, but the equation is: find the value of x. x-3 over 4 minus 1 is equal to x minus 5 over 4. help??
Its written as a fraction. when i say "over" thats what i mean. I'd really like to know how to do this. I think it can also be down like this though:
(x-3)/5-1=(x-5)/4

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
%28%28x-3%29%2F5%29-1=%28x-5%29%2F4
Since the LCD is 20 multiply the equation by 4
%28%28x-3%29%2A20%2F5%29-1%2A20=%28x-5%29%2A20%2F4
4x-12-20 = 5x-25
4x-5x=12+20-25
-x=7
x=-7

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
%28%28x-3%29%2F4%29-1+=+%28x-5%29%2F4
Multiply equation by 4 to cancel out the denominators
%28x-3%29+-4+=+x-5
Combine like terms
x-7+=+x-5
Subtract x on both sides, they cancel
-7+=+-5
False statement, thus no solution
