Question 465129: Hi, can you please help me solve this system of equations?
x/2 + y/3 = 5
x/3 + y/4 = 1
Thank you so much!
Answer by algebrahouse.com(1659) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! x/2 + y/3 = 5 ----> 3x + 2y = 30 {multiplied top equation by 6}
x/3 + y/4 = 1 ----> 4x + 3y = 12 {multiplied bottom equation by 12}
3x + 2y = 30 ----> -9x - 6y = -90 {multiplied top equation by -3}
4x + 3y = 12 -----> 8x + 6y = 24 {multiplied bottom equation by 2}
-9x - 6y = -90
8x + 6y = 24
---------------
-x = -66 {added the two new equations together}
x = 66 {divided both sides by -1}
You can now substitute 66, in for x, into any equation with an x and a y, to solve for y.
8x + 6y = 24
8(66) + 6y = 24 {substituted 66 in for x}
528 + 6y = 24 {multiplied 8 by 66}
6y = -504 {subtracted 528 from both sides}
y = -84 {divided both sides by 6}
x = 66 and y = -84
