Question 465040: I have a word problem and would like to know the steps to the solution.
The mean of five numbers is 6. If one of the five numbers is removed, the mean becomes 7. What is the value of the number that was removed?
So far this is what I got:
5*x/5=6*5=30/5=6
I really don't know the steps to take to get this answer. Can you please help?

If the mean of numbers is , then the sum of the numbers is

Next you have the mean of numbers is , hence the sum of the numbers is

The difference in the two sums is the number removed. So is the value you seek -- given correctly performed arithmetic.
