Question 46447: Would someone explain in detail how to solve the following problem:
A bookstore manager plans to spend $60 on pens at 30 cents each and pencils at 10 cents each. The equation 0.10x + 0.30y = 60 can be used to represent the model in this situation.
a.) What do x and y represent?
b.) graph the equation
c.) write the equation in slope - intercept form.
d.) what is the slope of the line?
e.) what does the slope tell you?
What I have so far is:
0.10x + 0.30y = 60
0.30y = -0.10x + 60
I don't exactly know where to go from here because it hasn't been expalined very well in my class.
Thanks
You can put this solution on YOUR website! .1X+.3Y=60 OR .3Y=-.1X+60 OR Y=-.1/.3X+60/.3 OR Y=-1/3X+200 THIS IS THE SLOPE INTERCEPT FORMULA. THE SLOPE IS -1/3 & THE Y INTERCEPT IS 200 ON THE X AXIS.
X REPRESENTS THE HORIZONTAL AXIS OF THE GRAPH & Y REPRESENTS THE VERTICLE AXIS OF THE GRAPH.
I DON'T HAVE GRAPH CAPABILITY.
THE SLOPE OF THIS LINE IS -1/3 AND THIS NEGATIVE SLOPE SAYS THAT FOR EVERY
-3 X UNITS TO THE LEFT THE Y VALUE INCREASES BY 1 UNIT UP.
