So the question becomes: "What do you mean by 'subtract'?"

Do you mean to take and subtract that quantity from ?

Or did you simply use the word 'subtract' because there is a minus sign between the two parenthetical quantities?

I'll assume the latter.

First step: Take a blank sheet of paper and write the words 'subtract', 'subtraction', and 'subtracted'. Write any other forms of the word you can think of. Then crumple the paper and throw it in the trash. Forget you ever knew these words.

From now on, you will only Add. If you want the difference between two quantities, you will add the opposite of the second quantity.

Re-write your problem:

Apply the distributive property AND the new rule about only Adding:

Anywhere you have two negatives in a row, get rid of them and make it positive:

Plus x squared plus a minus x squared is zero, 5x plus 3x is 8x, -2 plus -5 is -7, so:

Next lesson -- get rid of the word 'divide' From now on, we only multiply. If you want to split something into a number of parts, don't divide, multiply by the reciprocal.
