How is dividing a polynomial by a binomial similar to or different from the long division learned in elementary school?

Very similar, except for every time you divide, you only divide the "first terms"
For example:
x + 2 |3x² - 4x + 5 {dividing 3x² - 4x + 5 by x + 2}

You would start this by only dividing the first terms: x into 3x², then:
- put the division answer up top
- multiply back with the distributive property
- subtract
- bring down the next term
- do it all over again

When you are done, write the remainder over what you were dividing by (x + 2)
