Question 458568: If a couch cost $640 after a 20% discount, what was its original price?
I did 640x.20 and got 128.00 Then I added 128+640 and got 768.
When I checked the answer sheet it says its 800. I want to know why? Isnt the formula for decreasing and increasing percentage like this: price + (price x %)
And Price - (price x %) ?
I also tried 20/100 = 640/x and got a diferent answer.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
If a couch cost $640 after a 20% discount, what was its original price?
-------
Let the original price be "x".
Equation:
x - 0.20x = 640
---
0.80x = 640
---------------------
x = 640/0.80
---
x = $800 (original price)
