SOLUTION: I have to solve using long division. (y^2 - 2y +5) / (y+1)
I got: y - 3 + 2/y+1
but the back of the book Key has y - 3 + 8/y+1.

Where did I go wrong? I've done the problem several times and always get the same answer! Answer by htmentor(1343) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! In the last step when you are determining the remainder, you are adding -3 to 5 instead of subtracting. You should have
-3y + 5
-
-3y - 3
-----------
0y + 8
