You can put this solution on YOUR website!
You need 2 equations: 1 for going
and 1 for the return trip
going:
+d+=+r%2At+
(1)+144+=+r%2At+
returning:
(2) +144+=+2r%2A%28t+-+4%29+
From (1):
+t+=+144%2Fr+
Substitute this into (2)
(2) +144+=+2r%2A%28144%2Fr+-+4%29+
(2) +144+=+288+-+8r+
(2) +8r+=+144+
(2) +r+=+18+
The speed going was 18 mi/hr
check answer:
(1)+144+=+18%2At+
(1)+t+=+8+
and
(2) +144+=+2%2A18%2A%288+-+4%29+
(2) +144+=+36%2A4+
(2) +144+=+144+
OK

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
d=144
speed outward= xmph
return speed = 2x mph
time outward = 144/x
time return = 144/2x
144/x-144/2x=4
lcd=2x
288-144=4*2x
144=8x
x= 18 mph speed out ward
