Question 454135: one pump can fill a tank in 12 minutes while another takes 16 minutes to empty the same tank. How long would it take to fill the tank if both pumps were on? Answer by solver91311(24713) (Show Source):
If you can fill a tank in 12 minutes, then you can fill of the tank in 1 minute. If you can empty a tank in 16 minutes, then you can empty of the tank in 1 minute.
If both are working together, then
fills in 1 minute.
Apply the LCD, add the two fractions, and then take the reciprocal to find the time to fill with both pumps going.
