Let Beth be x years old now, Chris is therefore x + 3 years old now.
Seven years from now, Chris will be x + 3 + 7 = x + 10 years old
Age of Beth one year ago = x - 1 (since presently she is x years old)
From the given condition we can write the equation as:
x + 10 = 2 (x - 1)
x + 10 = 2x - 2
x = 12
Beth is 12 years old and Chris is 12 + 3 = 15 years old.
