You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let x = Tom's age
Let y = Todd's age
:
Tom is 5 times as old as Todd.
x = 5y
:
In 8 years toms age will be 4 years more than 3 times as old as Todd.
x + 8 = 3(y+8) + 4
x + 8 = 3y + 24 + 4
x + 8 = 3y + 28
x = 3y + 28 - 8
x = 3y + 20
Replace x with 5y
5y = 3y + 20
5y - 3y = 20
2y = 20
y = 20%2F2
y = 10 yrs is Todd's age
then
5(10) = 50 is Tom's age

Check this in the statement:
"n 8 years toms age will be 4 years more than 3 times as old as Todd."
50 + 8 = 3(10 + 8) + 4
58 = 3(18)) + 4
58 = 54 + 4; confirms our solutions
