Use polynomial long division. Too difficult to render on this system, but you can review the process at:

There are two pages on Polynomial Long Division so be sure to read both.

You should get a quotient of x + 2 and a remainder of 1. Recall that when you did integer division -- say, 10 divided by 3, you got a quotient of 3 and a remainder of 1, meaning that the answer was 3 plus 1/3.

Same situation here, it is just that you have a denominator that is your divisor binomial.
