You can put this solution on YOUR website! If the opposite of a number must be greater than twice the number, what are the possible numbers?
:
let x = the number
then
-x = the opposite of the number
:
Write an equation for the given statement:
-x > 2x
-x - 2x > 0
-3x > 0
We want x to be positive, multiply by -1, this reverses the inequality sign.
3x < 0
From this we can say x is any value less than 0 (all negative values)
:
For example say that x = -3, put this in our original equation
-x > 2x
-(-3) > 2(-3)
+3 > -6, true
