Question 447748: 5thgrade word problem a rectangular swimming pool needs 14 lifeguards. If each side uses the same number of lifeguards where are they located. HINT a lifeguard at a corner counts for 2 sides.

I only come up with 12 guards, 4 on each side
the top of the rectangle is 1234, the right side is 4,6,8,12, the bottom is 9,10,11,12 and the left side is 1,5,7,9

There are only 2 basic ways. In the diagrams
below, a "0" on the corner means there is NO
lifeguard on that corner, a 1 on a corner
means there IS a lifeguard on that corner. The
numbers between the corners tell how many
"non-corner" lifeguards are on that side. In
both cases you will notice that the sum of all
the numbers is 14, and the sum of the numbers
on each side is 4.
