This problem is much easier than it looks at first glance. The part about cutting the squares from the rectangular piece of tin is actually irrelevant to the problem. This is a VOLUME problem, plain and simple!! V= LWH

Let H = 3 inches (given)
x = width of rectangle
2x = length of rectangle

V = LWH
%282x%29%2Ax%2A+3+=+96
6x%5E2+=+96

Divide both sides by 6.
x%5E2+=+16
x+=+4+ or x+=-4, but x is a side of a rectangle, so it cannot be negative.

x= 4 width of the rectangle
2x = 8 length of the rectangle.

Check: Volume = LWH+=+8%2A+4%2A+3= 96 cubic inches.
