x+5y=137
4y=137-45=92
y=23
x=22

Another approach:
If all 45 coins were pennies, the total would be $0.45
Each coin that is a nickel instead increases the total by 4 cents.
137 - 45 = 88 cents
88/4 = 22 pennies replaced by nickels
--> 22 nickels, 23 pennies.
