Convert 8:12 to a 24-hour time, i.g. 20:12.

20:12 - 5:45

Subtract. However, when you carry (change 20 to 19), be sure to add 60 instead of 100 since there are 60 minutes in an hour.
20:12 - 05:45 = 19:72 - 05:45 = 14:27.
