You can put this solution on YOUR website! A diver is standing on a platform 24 ft above the pool. He jumps from the platform with an initial upward velocity of 8 ft/s. How long will it take for him to hit the water.
.
general form of equation:
h(t) = -32t^2 + vt + vo
where
h(t) is height at time t
t is time
v is initial velocity
vo is initial height
.
h(t) = -32t^2 + 8t + 24
He hits the water when h(t) is zero:
0 = -32t^2 + 8t + 24
0 = 4t^2 - t - 3
0 = (4t+3)(t-1)
t = {-3/4, 1}
we can throw out the negative solution leaving:
t = 1 second
