Let x and (8-x) represent the numbers

Question states***their product is 9

  x(8-x) = 9

   8x-x^2=9

   x^2 - 8x + 9 = 0

factoring

 (x-9)(x+1) = 0

 (x-9)= 0   x =  9  and (8-x) = -1

 (x+1) = 0  x = -1  and (8-(-1) = 9

 In either event, The numbers are 9 and -1
