SOLUTION: Given that (3x-a)(x-2)(x-7) = 3x^3-32x^2=81x-70, determine the value of a. My answer came out to be 3, but not sure of my answer. thanks for looking over my answer.

Log On
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Given that (3x-a)(x-2)(x-7) = 3x^3-32x^2=81x-70, determine the value of a.
(3x-a)(x^2-9x+14)
3x^3-27x^2+42x-ax^2+9ax-14a
3x^3-(27+a)x^2+(42+9a)x-14a=3x^3-32x^2+81x-70
This says:
-27-a=-32 or a=5
and
42+9a=81 or a=39/9
and -14a=-70 or a=5
There is a contradiction here that I think is the result of your posting.
