Question 438400: Haley has a board that is 13 feet long. She uses a saw to cut the board into 5 pieces. Every cut made with this saw results in a loss of 1/8 inch in length. She cuts a piece that is 5 1/2 feet long. She cuts the remaining piece of board into 4 equal pieces of equal length. What will the length be of each of those remaining 4 pieces?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let x ft the length of one of four equal pieces, then the length of four is, 4x ft
Since every cut we loss 1/8 inches=1/8*12 ft=1/96 ft, for four cuts the material
that we loss will be:1/96*4=4/96=1/24 ft.
Now we write the equation:4x%2B1%2F24%2B11%2F2=13 => 4x=13-1%2F24-11%2F2
4x=%2824%2A13-133%29%2F24=179%2F24 => x=179%2F%2824%2A4%29 => x=%28179%2F96%29+ft
Answer:The length of one of four equal pieces will be %28179%2F96%29+ft.
