Question states***

  x(11-x) = 24

   x^2 - 11x + 24 = 0

factoring

 (x-8)(x-3)= 0

 (x-8)=0    x = 8 and The smaller number is 3. (11-8)  Difference is (8-3) = 5

 (x-3)= 0
