Question 435412: Can you please help me solve this word problem?
Tony is 10 years older than his Sam. In 5 years, Tony will be twice as old as Sam. How old are they now?
We need to solve the word problem using two equations, and I can never get the second equation right. Here's what I get:
x=Sam's age Y= Tony's age
x+10=y
5+y=2x

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
the 1st equation is fine

for the 2nd equation ___ in five years, EVERYONE is five years older ___ 5+y = 2(x+5) ___ 5+y = 2x+10

subtracting equations ___ (5+y) - (y) = (2x+10) - (x+10)

5 = x

substituting ___ (5) + 10 = y ___ 15 = y
