------------------------------
Let the price he paid be "x":
Equation:

"If a discount of 20% off the retail price of a desk saves Mark $45, how much did he pay for the desk?"

45 is 20% of what number?

Use the forumula a = p(b)
a = part
p = percent {as a decimal}
b = whole

45 = .2(b) {substituted into formula and changed 20% to a decimal}
b = 225

The retail price was $225

Subtract the $45 discount:
$225 - $45
= $180 is the price he paid after discount
