It says,"second plane..... it's speed is 50 miles per hour faster.", therefore
(s+50) = speed of the 2nd plane

We are doing this in hrs, change 45 min to .75 hrs; change 2 hr 15 min to 2.25 hrs

Travel time of the 1st plane given as 2.25 hrs, 2nd plane .75 hrs less or 1.5 hrs

1st plane travel dist + 2nd plane travel dist = 2325 mi
2.25s + 1.5(s+50) = 2325
