Question 431128: I'm trying to help my stepson do his math. Writing Equations from Word Problems. I don't know how to do this.
The problem is:
7 less than triple a number is the same as the sum of the number and 12. Find the number.
I managed to write out: 7-3*n=n+12
Where do I go from here?

You can put this solution on YOUR website! 7 less than triple a number is the same as the sum of the number and 12.
:
3n - 7 = n + 12, close to what you had, but you should subtract the 7
:
subtract n from both sides, add 7 to both sides, then you have:
3n - n = 12 + 7
2n = 19
n = ; divided both sides by 2
n = 9.5 is the number
:
:
Check it in the original equation
3(9.5) - 7 = 12 + 9.5
28.5 - 7 = 21.5
