Question 43073: I need to check my math on this one. I always put the answers in the wrong order:
Two rainstorms occurred in one week in a certain area. The first storm lasted 20 hours, and the second storm lasted 40 hours, for a total 1800mL of rain. What was the rate of rainfall for each of the two storms if the sum of the two rates was 55mL per hour?
1st storm ____ mL per hour
2nd storm ____ mL per hour

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let the first rainfall be x
Let the second rainfall be y
EQUATION 1:
x+y=55
y=55-x (subsitution)
EQUATION 2:
20x+40y=1800
20x+40(55-x)=1800
-20x=-400
x=20
y=55-20
y=35
Hence, the first rainfall was 20mlph and the second one was at 35mlph.
