Question 430207: Please help me solve this equation:
The three sides of a right triangle are represented by x, x+4, and x+8. Find the value of X and the three sides of the triangle algebraically.
So far this is what I have:
a^2+b^2=c^2
X^2+(x+4)(x+4)= (x+8)(x+8)

Hi
a^2+b^2=c^2
x^2+(x+4)(x+4)= (x+8)(x+8) |good work on the Set Up
x^2 + x^2 + 8x+ 16 = x^2 + 16x + 64
x^2-8x-48 = 0
factoring
(x+4)(x-12) = 0
(x+4)= 0 x = -4 |tossing out negative solution for length
(x-12) = 0 x = 12
three sides are 12, 16 and 20
CHECKING our Answer***
12^2 + 16^2 = 144 + 256 = 20^2 = 400

That's right. You just need to solve the square equation.
x%5E2+%2B+x%5E2+%2B+8x+%2B+16+=+x%5E2+%2B+16x+%2B+64
x%5E2+-+8x+-+48+=+0
D+=+8%5E2+%2B+4%2A48+=+256
x+=+%288+%2B+16%29%2F2+=+12
Another root is negative.
