This is a "simple interest" problem
Let A = amount to invest @ 5% yearly interest
+18000+=++A+%2B+A%2A%281%2F2%29%2A.05+
+18000+=+A%2A%281+%2B+.025%29+
+A+=+18000%2F1.025+
+A+=+17560.98+
