On his trip to the mountains, Klink drove for 3 hours at an average speed of 50 mph, then for 2 hours at an average speed of 30 mph. What was his average for the entire trip?
-----
Trip average = (total distance)/(total time)
----
1st leg:
distance = 3*50 = 150 miles in 3 hrs.
---
2nd leg:
distance = 2*30 = 60 miles in 2 hrs
----
Trip average = (150+60)/(3+2) = 210/5 = 42 mph

Hi
(3*50mph + 2*30mph)/5hr = 42mph
