i covers a concept called grouping.
then it covers a concept of multiplication.
then it covers a concept of division.
for your problem:
your concept of grouping would be 7.
9 divided by 7 would be shown on the number line like:
|--------------------------| 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 |--------------------|-----|
you would break up your number line into groups of 9 units and groups of 7 units.
you would then count how many groups of 7 would fit into your group of 9.
in this case the group of 7 goes into a group of 9 one time with a remainder of 2.
if you are into fractions, then you could show that the remainder is 2 units out of a group of 7 units which would be the fraction of 2/7.
your answer with remainder is 1 group of 7 with a remainder of 2 units.
your answer with fractions would be 1 and 2/7 groups of 7.
