The square root is simply the number such that if you multiply it by itself, you get the original number. For example, sqrt%289%29+=+3. Many square roots come from memorization, others you'll need a calculator or you can use differential methods.

Identifying whether square roots are (ir)rational takes some practice. For integers, if you can easily recognize that the number is a perfect square, say 529, then you can conclude that sqrt%28529%29 is rational. Decimals are even trickier, as it might take memorization to conclude that sqrt%2815.21%29 is rational.
