Let t=time it takes them working together.
john does 1/6 the job in 1 hr and sally does 1/4.
1/4 + 1/6 = 1/t
3/12 + 2/12 = 5/12
t=12/5 hrs. working together.

portion of house that will be painted in one hour = 1/4 + 1/6
= 5/12

required time = 12/5 hr.

= 2 hours 24 minutes.
