You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Hamburgers ----- x
Hotdogs ------------ y
5 x + 3 y = 24.25 .............1
3 x + 5 y = 21.25 .............2

multiply (1)by -5
Multiply (2) by 3
-25 x + -15 y = -121.25
9 x + 15 y = 63.75

Add the two equations

-16 x + 0 y = -57.5

/ -16

x=3.59

plug value of x in (1)

5 x + 3 y = 24.25
17.97 + 3 y = 24.25
3 y = 24.25 + -17.97
3 y = 6.28
y = 2.09

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let cost of a hamburger = a
Let cost of a hot dog = b
given:
(1) +5a+%2B+3b+=+2425+ (in cents)
(2) +3a+%2B+5b+=+2175+ (in cents)
----------------
Multiply (1) by 3 and (2) by 5
(1) +15a+%2B+9b+=+7275+
(2) +15a+%2B+25b+=+10875+
Subtract (1) from (2)
(2) +15a+%2B+25b+=+10875+
(1) +-15a+-+9b+=+-7275+
+16b+=+3600+
+b+=+225+
Plug this into (2)
(2) +3a+%2B+5%2A225+=+2175+
+3a+%2B+1125++=+2175+
+3a+=+1050+
a+=+350+
The price of a hamburger is $3.50
check:
(1) +15a+%2B+9b+=+7275+
(1) +15%2A350+%2B+9%2A225+=+7275+
(1) +5250+%2B+2025+=+7275+
(1) +7275+=+7275+
OK
