You can put this solution on YOUR website!
If the minute hand = 5.5 inches, the route that the tip of the hand travels is along the circumference of a circle whose radius is 5.5 inches. The whole circumference of the circle is found using the formula:
c+=+2+%2A+pi+%2A+radius
c+=+2+%2A+pi+%2A+%285.5%29+=+11+%2A+pi
But this is for the whole circle (60 minutes.) If the hand only goes 40 minutes, then we have more work to do:
60 minutes it travels 11+%2A+pi
1 minute it travels %2811%2F60%29+%2A+pi (dividing both sides by 60)
40 minutes it travels %2840%29+%2A+%2811%2F60%29+%2A+pi (multiplying both sides by 40)
%2840%29+%2A+%2811%2F60%29+%2A+pi+=+%2822%2F3%29+%2A+pi inches = (22/3) * (3.14159) inches = 23.038 inches
