You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Joe and Sam are running on a jogging trail.
Joe starts running 5 minutes after Sam does.
If Sam runs at an average speed of 8ft/sec and
Joe runs at an average speed of 9ft/sec,
how many minutes after Joe starts running will he catch up with sam?
-----------------------------
Joe DATA:
rate = 9 ft/sec ; time = x-300 sec ; distance = rt = 9(x-300) ft
----
Sam DATA:
rate = 8 ft/sec ; time = x sec ; distance = 8x ft
----
Equation:
distance = distance
9(x-300) = 8x
9x - 2700 = 8x
x = 2700 sec
---
x = 2700/60 = 45 minutes (Sam running time)
x-300 = 2400/60 = 40 minutes (Joe's running time)
