Question 41608: An enclosed gas exerts a pressure P on the walls of its container. This pressure is directly proportional to the temperature T of the gas. If the pressure is 2 pounds per square inch when the temperature is 280 K, identify the appropriate direct variation equation.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Pressure P is directly proportional to temperature T, so let
P+=+c%2AT__________(1)
where c = arbitrary constant of variation/proportionality.
When T = 280 K, P = 2 psi.
Substitute these values P = 2 and T = 280 in eqn. (1)
so 2+=+c%2A280
or c+=+2%2F280 = 1%2F140

Thus substituting this value in eqn. (1) we have
P+=+%281%2F140%29%2AT
or T = 140P

This is the appropriate direct variation equation.
